Where does the funding come for Storage Heater Grants and will I have to pay anything?

The ECO Fund

An ECO Levy is placed on the electricity bills of all UK households and the main energy companies pay this into the ECO Fund.

ECO accredited installation companies can apply for a share of this fund to pay for the storage heaters they install under the scheme.

Attempts by the Government to keep energy bills down has meant cutting the ECO Levy, which in turn reduces the amount available to provide storage heater grants.

Calculation of individual storage heater grants

The amount of your storage heater grant is based on a number of factors relating to your home. These include the type of home you live in, how many bedrooms it has and how many external walls there are. This information is used to estimate the potential reduction in carbon emissions you could achieve by having more energy efficient storage heaters installed.

The greater the reduction in carbon emissions, the greater your storage heater grant will be. It then depends on how many storage heaters the ECO Scheme suggests that you have installed, whether you will be asked to contribute towards the work. If you decide not to contribute, you can withdraw your application without cost.

A reduction in the ECO levy on electricity bills has resulted in more householders being asked to contribute, especially for flats, maisonettes and terraced houses, for which carbon emissions savings tend to be smaller.
